Resources for Adopting Parents

Below is a list of resources for adoptive parents in all stages of the adoption process. Most are national resources, although I have included a few that are specific to Virginia and Washington, DC, where I practice. If you know of a great resource that should be on this list, please do send them along! You can leave them in the Comments or email me (evaughan at vaughanfirm dot com).

The Dave Thomas Foundation Did you know that Dave Thomas (of Wendy’s restaurant fame) is adopted? The Dave Thomas Foundation offers many free resources for adoptive parents. One example is a useful listing of U.S. employers who offer adoption benefits, and materials to present to your employer to convince them that they should have adoption benefits, too!

Adoptive Families Magazine The magazine itself requires a paid subscription, but many articles and resources for adoptive parents are available online, including basic adoption information, parenting advice, and directories of adoption professionals.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Adoption Site Includes basic information on adoption, a database of federal and state laws on adoption, information on parenting adopted children, information about post-adoption depression, and much more.

Adoptive Family Preservation(Note: Virginia only) Run by United Methodist Family Services, this is a support network for families who have already adopted, offering counseling, referrals, and support groups. In my experience they return calls promptly and are friendly and helpful.
